2009 Thurston County Relay for Life

In June, State Treasurer employees joined forces with employees of the Senate and House of Representatives to participate in the 2009 Thurston County Relay for Life sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The team was named "Colors of Hope" with each color representing a different type of cancer for which they had committed to finding a cure. The event was held June 26-27 at Black Hills High School with team members walking for 24 hours, in one hour shifts, as a sign of hope and strength and to raise funds in the fight to find a cure for cancer. The relay kicked off with cancer survivors making the first lap. It was a lap filled with joy and celebration. At 10 p.m. names were read honoring those who had lost their battle with cancer and luminaries were lit for both those who had lost but also those who continue on with the battle. Throughout the evening and into the next day, quarters were laid along the track as a symbol of how much cancer has touched everyone's life. It was an amazing event where old friends celebrated and new friends were made.

In addition to the walk, the team held a silent auction and bake sale. It was a great success in part due to the support of the employees of the Treasurer's Office, the Senate and the House of Representatives. "Colors of Hope" raised a total of $3,600 for Relay for Life. It is rewarding to know that each dollar donated will go to find a cure for cancer.
